Know Your Fair Housing Rights

The City Commission on Human Rights’ Fair Housing Brochure details the rights of tenants and prospective home buyers, as well as the responsibilities of landlords and housing providers. The brochure answers some of the most commonly asked questions about housing discrimination in New York City.

The City Commission on Human Rights’ Lawful Source of Income Fact Sheet provides information on discrimination in housing for Section 8 or other government assistance recipients. Lawful source of income in housing is a protected class under the New York City Human Rights Law.

Want to report discrimination?

If you believe you have been the victim of discrimination, file a complaint or call 311 and ask for the City Commission on Human Rights. The New York City Human Rights Law requires that the complaint be filed within one year from the date of the last alleged act of discrimination.
