The Process

Overview

Where We Live NYC is a collaborative planning process led by the City of New York to better understand how challenges like segregation and discrimination impact New Yorker’s everyday lives. We are using that information to develop policy solutions that advance opportunity for all.

The City worked with residents, community leaders, and government partners to develop the next chapter of fair housing policies that fight discrimination, break down barriers to opportunity, and build more just and inclusive neighborhoods. The Where We Live NYC process included:

data analysis, spring 2018 - fall 2019
The City conducted extensive data analysis that is included in the Where We Live NYC Plan, using publicly available resources as well as data from city agencies and other government partners.

fair housing stakeholder group, spring 2018 - fall 2019
More than 150 advocates, service providers, researchers, and community leaders participated in each phase of the Where We Live NYC process.

government partnerships, spring 2018 - fall 2019
Dozens of government partners evaluated existing policies and initiatives and designed new policy solutions that are both impactful and feasible.

community conversations, summer 2018 - fall 2018
More than 700 New Yorkers shared their personal experiences with fair housing issues through 62 focus group-style conversations in 15 different languages hosted with community-based organizations. Through interactive online tools, the City collected input digitally and encouraged New Yorkers to host their own conversations in their communities. Learn more about the community conversations.

public events, summer 2018 - winter 2020
We invited New Yorkers to join public events to stay updated on the Where We Live NYC process, provide input, and learn more about fair housing rights, data, and history. Building on the Where We Live NYC Summit in June 2019, there were events held across the five boroughs.
